Pieper’s reading this week challenges popular conceptions of rest as a mere interlude of “refreshment” for the sake of productivity and suggests that true rest is a “basic power of the human soul” to experience and celebrate the “reality of creation.” Related, Pascal offers a critical diagnosis of humanity’s consistent desire for agitation, distraction, or occupation as a means to avoid our discomfort with solitude or stillness.
Guidelines
"RED CUP" is an one-act documentary theatre performance (a stage work based on real material) inspired by written essays from Notre Dame students on the drinking culture in college, a culture often associated with "rest" or "leisure."
The play is inspired by the final papers written for the course Drunk on Film: The Psychology of Storytelling with Alcohol and Its Effects on Alcohol Consumption at Notre Dame. With a visual motif of the ubiquitous red solo party cup, and accompanied by a host of media references from films, ads, and social media posts, "RED CUP" tells the intimate stories of a small group of Notre Dame students, and the profound effect alcohol has had in their lives, from childhood through their senior year in college.
Students must register for a ticket before October 15. Registration is limited to 350 students.
