Purpose
The Kennedy Scholars Fellowship supports senior thesis research projects from students who successfully completed the London Undergraduate Program's Kennedy Scholars Seminar , with the goal of supporting them in further research and exploration after their semester in London has ended and they have had additional time to further develop their senior theses. Proposals are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis; proposals that include travel have specific deadlines (see below).
Possible uses of these grant funds might include:

Travel (and associated lodging and meal costs) regardless of destination, in order to conduct library, archival, experiential or interview-based research (see restrictions below).

Research resources not available through the Hesburgh Library or the University’s ILL services, including books, data-sets, journals, or reproduction costs necessary to access archive materials not otherwise accessible.

Research services such as translation, human subject payments, or access to an online tool or service, where no tool or service provided by the University meets the research need.

Equipment hire, where the necessary equipment is not available from the University. The purchase of small items of equipment may be considered where hire is not available.

Only available to students who successfully completed the London Undergraduate Program's Kennedy Scholars Seminar.
Application timing for travel:

For travel during Fall Break 2026: Applications must be received by 9am EST September 11, 2026

For travel during Winter Break 2026-27: Applications must be received by 9am EST October 23, 2026

For travel during Spring Break 2027: Applications must be received by 9am EST February 5, 2027

For travel in May/June 2027: Applications must be received by 9am EST March 12, 2027

For travel in July/August 2027: Applications must be received by 9am EST April 30, 2027
Application Instructions
Proposal Application Materials
Every application must have the following elements with the correct formatting to be considered.

Title page with a 100-word non-technical abstract.

Five-page project proposal that includes a description of the project, methods, timeline, and a discussion of broader impacts.

Budget using the Franco budget template.

For Human Subject Research: IRB approval and completion of the online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) module.

Travel: For any domestic travel, complete the Domestic Travel Waiver Form. Projects involving international travel require that students register with tNotre Dame’s International Travel Registry.

Letter of Recommendation.

If grant funds are awarded, Awardees must submit a donor thank-you letter and copy of their senior thesis to Alice Tyrell and Charlotte Parkyn by no later than 30th April of their graduating year.
Proposal Preparation and Submission
All proposals should be five pages, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point Times New Roman font. Include page numbers (bottom center) and embed any figures or images within the project description with captions. Footnotes, endnotes, in-text citations, and the bibliography should use a discipline-appropriate citation style. The bibliography is not included in the page limit.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on the clarity of the proposed project, the intellectual merit, the potential impact of the project, and the applicant’s qualifications to conduct the proposed work.
Budget items with insufficient justification may be reduced or eliminated in an award offer.
